- Booting or Booting Up, the bootstrapping process that takes place when a computer system is turned on or reset. Typically this includes a Power On Self Test, loading the first part of the Operating System software called the Boot Loader (from the Boot Record or Boot Sector on disk) and starting the Boot Loader which then loads and starts the rest of the operating system.
